Challenge
The original brief was to create a distinctive water feature that would become a focal point within a landscaped garden, combining sculptural form with the movement, reflections and sound of water.
The design needed to have a strong presence within the garden while remaining simple to install and maintain. It also needed the quality of materials and finish expected from an individually designed Tills water feature.
Solution
The resulting design became The Specular — a sculptural bowl water feature centred around a bronze trumpet from which water gently flows into the surrounding reflective surface.
The dark inner surface gives the water visual depth, allowing reflections of the sky, planting and surrounding landscape to continually change across its surface. Water flowing over the central bronze form introduces gentle movement and sound, while the bronze exterior develops its own character through its finish and patina.
Following the response to the original design, The Specular was developed into an established Tills water sculpture, allowing the same carefully engineered design to be incorporated into other gardens and landscapes.
Benefit
The Specular provides a strong sculptural focal point while remaining closely connected to its surroundings. Its reflective water surface captures the changing sky, planting and light, meaning its appearance continually evolves throughout the day and seasons.
Designed as a self-contained water feature, The Specular combines the visual character of a water sculpture with the practical engineering developed through more than 26 years of designing and building water features.
