Frequently Asked Questions

Expertise, Trust & Background

Do I need a water feature specialist?

We receive calls every week from people who say their water feature isn’t working right or has never worked properly at all.

Although a water feature appears simple, there are many considerations: hydraulics, splash control, mechanical design, aesthetics, materials, maintenance access and more.

Many metal fabricators or landscapers step into the field of water features without fully understanding those requirements.

For these reasons we highly recommend discussing and purchasing through a water feature specialist. Its a significant investment and it needs to be right.

When should I contact a specialist?

Right at the beginning of your planning, a water feature specialist will ensure the products suitability, for what’s important to you.

With the exception of our AquaVeil® water wall, all our water features are generally intended for residential gardens. Commercial installations are possible but require careful consideration.

If your thinking of a water feature, please get in touch.

Why is Tills unique?

The water feature market is largely split between low-quality imports and large commercial contractors.

What we offer is unique.

We are artisans, with our own designs, creating high quality water features, backed by commercial-level technical understanding. Our background in the commercial water feature sector means we design for longevity, efficiency and maintainability — not just appearance.

Each piece is carefully made in the UK with close attention to detail.

How long has Tills been established?

Tills was founded in 2000 by brothers Mike and Steve Tillett.

With decades of combined experience in water engineering and design, and a genuine passion for working with water, the company was built on specialist knowledge rather than trend-driven products.

Design & Bespoke Options

Standard designs or bespoke?

If you read our About Us page, you’ll see that we absolutely can design and manufacture fully bespoke water features. In fact, much of our background is in large commercial water feature design and construction.

However, true one-off bespoke water features involve significant design time, prototyping, engineering and cost. What many people are actually looking for when they say “bespoke” is something that feels unique, beautifully made, and perfectly suited to their space.

That is exactly why we focus on a curated collection of original designs, built in high-quality materials, with the flexibility to manufacture most of them to your required size. You get something that looks and feels bespoke — without the excessive cost of a full custom design process.

Set sizes or bespoke?

Most of our water features are standard designs made to your bespoke dimensions. This allows them to integrate perfectly into your garden layout, terrace width, planting scheme or focal point.

The only exceptions are the Specular and Volute which come in one size, although its possible to have larger through our bespoke design service.

By offering adaptable sizing within proven designs, we achieve the right balance between individuality, reliability and value.

How do I achieve a bespoke look without full bespoke costs?

Rather than offering a large catalogue of average designs, we create a small number of distinctive, refined water features, each crafted with attention to detail and material quality.

For example:

Each design has a strong identity, and where possible can be manufactured to suit your exact dimensions. The result is a water feature that feels considered and intentional — not off-the-shelf.

Can I take my water feature with me if I move?

In many cases, yes.

Because our water features are manufactured from high-grade materials and engineered properly, they are not disposable garden accessories. If they haven’t been heavily built into surrounding hard landscaping, they can often be relocated.

It ultimately depends on how integrated the installation is within your garden design — something we are happy to advise on at the outset if future relocation is important to you.

Installation & Practical Considerations

How easy are they to install?  Do you install?

All of our water features are designed so that the complex elements are completed during manufacture — not left to be figured out on site.

The Specular and Volute arrive fully built. They simply require a suitable concrete foundation and an electrical supply.

Our other models, which are made to bespoke sizes, are also straightforward to install. In most cases, we deliver them, position them onto your prepared base and commission them for you on a temporary supply before handover.

We are always happy to discuss site preparation in advance so there are no surprises.

What work do I need to arrange?

Typically:

  • A suitable concrete foundation
  • A 230V mains electrical supply installed by a qualified electrician
  • Decorative stone (if covering a reservoir)

Everything else — pumps, pipework, internal components — is supplied and pre-configured by us.

We deliberately design our water features so that installation is as simple and stress-free as possible.

Do they come complete?

Yes.

All pumps, internal pipework and operating components are included and assembled. The only elements not included are external electrical switching/protection (which your electrician provides) and decorative covering stone where required.

You are not left sourcing technical parts — that is all part of what we do.

What power supply is required?

All our water features use energy-efficient pumps and operate on standard UK 230V mains power.

Cables typically extend approximately 8 metres from the unit. Final electrical connections must be completed by a competent, qualified electrician in accordance with regulations.

Practical Information

Are your water features made in the UK?

Yes.

Fabrication, welding, painting, pipework and assembly are all done here in the UK. Some specialist components, such as pumps manufactured in Germany, are sourced internationally where quality demands it.

Where are prices and lead times?

The Specular and Volute have their price at the bottom of the product page, lead time is 4-10 weeks.

Because our other designs are made to size and built by us, pricing and lead times vary.

Please contact us directly for accurate, up-to-date information.

What is the ordering process?

Once you are ready to proceed, we issue an Instruction to Proceed (ITP) document and deposit invoice.

Upon receipt, manufacturing begins. We then contact you to arrange delivery or installation when your water feature is ready.

Suitability & Applications

Do you service water features?

Yes — but only for our own.

In particular, the AquaVeil® may benefit from professional servicing. Most of our other models are intentionally designed to require minimal ongoing maintenance that you can comfortably manage yourself.

Residential or commercial?

With the exception of the AquaVeil®, our water features are generally intended for residential gardens.

Commercial installations are possible but require careful consideration. We advise discussing suitability with us early in your planning.

Who are your customers?

Our clients include:

  • Private homeowners
  • Garden designers
  • Interior designers
  • Architects
  • Contractors
  • Business owners

If you appreciate thoughtful design and quality materials, we would be delighted to work with you.

Water Management, Splash & Maintenance

Do they need a permanent water supply or drainage?

No.

All our water features are self-contained systems. The water continuously recirculates within the reservoir, so you don’t need a permanent water supply. You simply top up occasionally to allow for natural evaporation and periodically drain and refill to keep the water fresh. Drainage connections are not required — emptying can be done with buckets or a simple sump pump.

This closed-loop approach is not only practical but also significantly more responsible than features that rely on a continuous water feed.

Will it splash?

Splash is one of the most common design failures in poorly conceived water features.

We are regularly contacted by people whose water feature splashes excessively or has caused surrounding damage.

Our designs are engineered to minimise splash in normal weather conditions. Material choice, surface texture, fall height and flow rate all play a critical role — and getting these details right avoids wasted water, maintenance issues and unnecessary frustration.

Good splash control is not accidental — it is designed in from the outset.

What stops the water going green?

Water clarity is not an afterthought — it is fundamental to the design.

With over 25 years’ experience working with water in both domestic and commercial environments, we understand how circulation, reservoir design, light exposure and access for cleaning affect long-term water quality.

Each water feature is developed with maintenance in mind. A system that is easy to maintain is far more sustainable and enjoyable long term. If algae does appear, we offer wildlife-safe additives suitable for our systems.

A well-designed water feature should not become a constant battle.

What maintenance is required?

Maintenance varies slightly by design, and each water feature is supplied with its own operation and maintenance manual.

For example, the Specular bowl cleverly drains its water when turned off, allowing you to simply wipe the inside before restarting it.

Generally, maintenance consists of:

  • Occasional water top-up
  • Periodic drain and refill
  • Light cleaning

Because our features are engineered carefully at manufacture stage, there are no hidden complexities left for you to resolve later.

Lighting, Servicing & Support

Is lighting included?

The AquaVeil® water wall includes integrated lighting.

For our other designs, we typically recommend external lighting positioned around the feature. Water itself does not glow unless disrupted — so lighting is most effective when used creatively to highlight movement and texture.

We are happy to advise on this.

Do you offer servicing?

Yes — but only for our own water features.

In particular, the AquaVeil® may benefit from professional servicing. Most of our other models are intentionally designed to require minimal ongoing maintenance that you can comfortably manage yourself.

Do you repair other companies’ water features?

No.

We only repair our own installations. Third-party water features vary greatly in design and construction, and without knowing how they were engineered, we cannot guarantee satisfactory outcomes.

If there were ever an issue with one of our own features, of course we would resolve it.

Do you offer technical support?

Yes — and this is something we are proud of.

When you call, you speak directly to Mike or Steve — the designers and manufacturers. We are not a large call-centre operation.

Whether you are considering a purchase or already own one of our features, we are happy to help. Advice is free and always welcome.

Sustainability & Environmental Responsibility

Are your water features sustainable?

Yes — and sustainability is built into the design rather than added as a marketing feature.

Firstly, all of our water features operate as self-contained recirculating systems. The water is reused continuously, with only minor topping up required for evaporation. There is no constant mains water waste.

Secondly, we use carefully selected energy-efficient pumps. A properly engineered hydraulic system uses only the power it genuinely requires. Oversized pumps compensating for poor design are inefficient — and something we intentionally avoid.

Longevity is equally important. Our water features are fabricated in the UK using high-grade materials and careful construction methods. They are designed to last for many years, not to be replaced after a short lifespan. In our view, true sustainability comes from durability and quality — not disposability.

Manufacturing in the UK also reduces the environmental impact associated with mass-imported products. Fabrication, welding, painting and assembly are carried out here. Where we source components internationally, such as German-manufactured pumps, it is because efficiency and reliability justify it.

Finally, maintainability is central. A water feature that becomes unusable due to poor design, algae issues or mechanical failure is inherently unsustainable. Ours are engineered for long-term, realistic use.

A well-designed, well-made water feature that runs efficiently and lasts for decades is, we believe, the most responsible approach.
