This contemporary garden in Cambridge required a long, low water feature to run alongside the patio, creating a defined edge between the terrace and surrounding planting while providing a subtle focal point within the garden.
The proportions were particularly important. Rather than adapting the landscaping around a standard-size water feature, the design called for a rill manufactured to dimensions that worked precisely with the length and scale of the patio.
Material and finish were equally important. The property features copper cladding designed to develop naturally with age, so the water feature needed to complement the architecture while sitting comfortably amongst the surrounding planting and gravel.
Rill Amaya was selected for its simple architectural form and the ability to manufacture the established Tills design in bespoke dimensions. This provided the tailored appearance required for the garden without the time and complexity involved in designing a completely bespoke water feature from the ground up.
For this project, Rill Amaya was manufactured at 5966mm long × 450mm wide × 300mm high, allowing it to run almost six metres alongside the patio.
An aged bronze patina was chosen to complement the copper cladding of the property and create a natural relationship with the surrounding garden. Bubbling fountains introduce gentle movement across the dark reflective water surface, while the infinity edge continually draws surface water away, helping to remove floating debris and maintain the clean appearance of the rill.
At almost six metres long, direct delivery and installation by Tills was the most practical approach. With the required groundworks and base prepared by others, our team delivered and positioned the Rill Amaya, completed the water feature installation and commissioned the system using a temporary electrical supply. The permanent electrical connection was completed separately by the appropriate contractor.
The finished Rill Amaya runs almost six metres alongside the patio, its long, low proportions helping to define the space without dominating the garden. The bespoke dimensions allow the water feature to feel designed specifically for its setting while retaining the proven engineering of an established Tills design.
The aged bronze finish complements the copper cladding of the property and softens naturally against the gravel and surrounding planting. As the materials continue to weather, their changing patinas will add further character to the setting.
Bubbling fountains create radial patterns and reflections across the dark water, introducing movement and interest without overpowering the surrounding garden. The result is a subtle architectural water feature that feels integral to both the landscape and the property.
